Forum Theme: “From Roots to Fruits”
The NSCF Virtual Forum 2025 follows the theme “From Roots to Fruits,” using the metaphor of a tree to explore how different elements of our work contribute to the growth, sustainability, and impact of natural science collections. Each day of the forum will represent a stage of this process, reflecting on the activities, collaborations, and efforts that nourish and sustain our collective work. From the roots of our work to the fruits of our impact!
Day 1: Soil and Story (Laying the Foundation)
A tree can only grow strong if it has fertile soil. Similarly, the foundation of the NSCF’s work is built on its history, purpose, and the collective efforts that have shaped it.
This day will focus on:
-
The story of the NSCF, reflecting on how the initiative started, its vision and mission, and its evolution over the years.
-
Key global and national policies (e.g., Global Biodiversity Framework, climate crisis) that shape our work and the role of collections in addressing these challenges.
-
Honouring the founders and pioneers who laid the groundwork for the NSCF.
-
Exploring access, use, and impact of collections—setting the stage for the next phases of growth.
Day 2: Roots and Mycorrhiza (Strengthening Networks and Connections)
Roots provide stability and absorb nutrients, but they don’t work alone. Mycorrhizal fungi form connections with roots, enabling trees to thrive. Similarly, the NSCF is strengthened by institutional collaborations, partnerships, and shared knowledge.
This day will focus on:
-
Institutions sharing their progress, stories of transformation, and lessons learned since the collections assessments.
-
Challenges and breakthroughs in implementing recommendations from previous phases.
-
Strengthening networks and support systems, much like how trees rely on underground connections for resilience and survival.
Day 3: Trunks and Trees (Building a Strong and Sustainable Structure)
A tree’s trunk provides support, structure, and transport of essential nutrients. It represents the core operations, strategies, and governance that keep the NSCF strong and effective. This day will focus on:
-
The evolution of the Communities of Practice (CoP)—how they have developed and their role in NSCF’s work.
-
The NSCF Business Plan and Phase 4 Work Streams, providing a roadmap for future activities.
-
Open space discussions where participants can shape the next steps and strategies for NSCF’s continued growth.
-
Personal career journeys of scientists and collection staff, illustrating how individuals contribute to the broader system.
Day 4: Forest and Fruits (Celebrating Impact and Looking Ahead)
A tree does not stand alone; it is part of a forest, and its fruits benefit many. This final day focuses on collective leadership, well-being, and the long-term impact of NSCF’s work. Discussions will explore:
-
Personal and collective well-being, highlighting mindfulness, conflict resolution, and restorative justice.
-
Honouring the earth, recognizing the deep connection between collections, conservation, and sustainability.
-
Celebrating the fruits of our labor—scientific achievements, leadership, and new opportunities for the future.
Each day of the forum builds on the next, demonstrating how the foundational work that we do daily leads to growth, resilience, and impact. This journey will help us reflect on our contributions while collectively shaping the future of South Africa’s natural science collections.

Call for Institutional Reflections | NSCF Virtual Forum 2025
This year’s theme, “From Roots to Fruits,” invites us to reflect on the foundational work done through the Self-Assessments, Moderation Process, and Assessment Reports—and to track the “fruits” that have emerged from those roots.
One key way we will explore this theme is through institutional reflections. This is an opportunity for each institution to share their journey since the different stages of the Iqoqwana Initiative (self-assessments, moderations, feedback reports, and sense-making workshops) in 2023/2024, and to reflect on each stage.
-
What have we learned?
-
Has the Iqoqwana Initiative yielded any fruits?
-
What progress, insights, or innovations have emerged?
-
How have you continued to foster an action learning environment within your institution, in pursuit of staying in the learning zone?
