Qualifications: PhD in Botany

Q: What inspired you to make this career choice?
A: When I was younger, I actually wanted to be a veterinarian, so I chose to study Zoology and Botany. The field of ethnobotany drew me into the world of plants and the field of taxonomy drew me to the herbarium.

Q: Give a brief description of what your job entails
A: Research: I conduct taxonomic revisions of plant genera (figuring out the unique characters of each species and how the species are related to each other);
Knowledge generation: These taxonomic revisions are published in scientific journals and I also present my work at different conferences;
I also really enjoy writing popular articles that relate to my work and the collection;
I also do plant identifications and scientific curation in the collection.

Q: How does it contribute to Collections Management?
A: The correct identification of the specimens in the collection is extremely important.

Q: What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
A: I feel like I am busy building a large puzzle in my mind with each different plant character. From the different types of hairs to the habitat of each species. It’s exciting to keep learning and growing.

Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career within Scientific Collections Management?
A: The collection is for everyone and each specimen holds an opportunity for you to learn something, keep looking for those little opportunities and enjoy building your own puzzle in your mind.

Q: What does Leadership mean to you?
A: Leadership is to be able to inspire.
