Q: What inspired you to make this career choice?
A: My passion for Nature and Life Sciences in general, developed as I was growing up. Being curious about the interaction between plants and animals led me to pursue this career. After a few months into my first year of study at University of Venda, I became more biased towards plants than animals because plants are crucial constituents of our planet’s Biodiversity.
Q: A brief description of what your job entails?
A: My duties entail, Imaging and Mounting Herbarium Specimens. Curating plant specimens as well as capturing associated data for Natural Sciences Collection Facility priority plant families.
Q: How does it contribute to collections management?
A: Capturing associated data for respective specimens in Bolus Herbarium database makes it easier for people to have access to the collection, especially for research purposes.
Q: What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
A: I have always admired mounted specimens and had no idea how exciting it is to do that. NSCF gave me the opportunity to eventually do it. Of course initially it seemed a bit difficult, but now I enjoy it.
Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career within Scientific Collections Management?
A: I would advise anyone who is willing to go into collections management to have passion for plants and animals, also the willingness to learn new skills every day. Never hesitate to ask where you do not understand because this field is broad and needs one’s full attention.
Q: What does Leadership mean to you?
A: To me leadership means being to be able to communicate effectively and confidently with your team. The ability to empower and stimulate growth in people that you are leading is one of the key traits of a leader.
