Qualifications: BSc. Hons. Ecological Sciences
Q: What inspired you to make this career choice?
A: My parents were avid gardeners and the plethora of flowering plants and fruit trees were home to many little critters, so my love for nature began in my own backyard. I was most comfortable when wandering in the garden, listening to the warbles of weavers and bulbuls, closely inspecting a caterpillar devouring a leafy meal or befriending the resident stray cat. This child-like wonder grew into a deeper yearning to learn more about the natural world which, unsurprisingly, inspired my career path.
Q: Give a brief description of what your job entails.
A: I contribute towards curation, collections management and research within Durban Museum’s Entomology Department. I catalogue and integrate new acquisitions into the electronic management system and physical collection. I prepare loans and provide collection data for research and education. I conduct routine inspections within the collection to mitigate mould, infestation and maintain local climate control. I assist with field collections and specimen identifications as part of the departmental research projects.
Q: How does it contribute to Collections Management?
A: I undertake care and maintenance for the invertebrate collections. The routine monitoring is vital to ensure the safety and security of the valuable and irreplaceable specimens.
Q: What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
A: I enjoy the weekly visits to Durban’s nature reserves and parks for mosquito surveillance. What a privilege it is to be surrounded by nature while carrying out work activities.
Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career within Scientific Collections Management?
A: Firstly, a little research goes a long way to discover where one’s passions lie within the multifaceted landscape of natural science collections management. Secondly, grasp opportunities with both hands! Volunteer, join internships and learnership programmes within museums or herbaria with scientific collections. This will develop experience and grow your knowledge.
Q: What does Leadership mean to you?
A: I believe that leadership means to support and encourage. It is recognising that everyone has the potential to be great and investing in the individual is key to a thriving work environment.
