Q: What inspired you to make this career choice?
A: I started my journey at Iziko Museums of South Africa in August 2016, when I was appointed as a GRAP 103 Data Capturer at the Entomology Collection and a few years later, as the Collections Assistant in the same Collection. I am very fortunate and believe that my current job chose me. I started off by cataloguing and digitizing insect specimens, however, more opportunities came my way through on-the-job training provided by my supervisor. I now assist with public programs, loans, donations, visitors and GRAP 103 processes. My love for these beautiful creepy crawlies grows stronger every day and I absolutely enjoy working in the museum environment. I am always encouraged by my supervisor to learn more.
Q: Give a brief description of what your job entails.
A: I catalogue; accession and digitize insect specimens on an ordinary day. However, the Entomology Collection is such a dynamic collection that you rarely have a boring or an ordinary day. I assist with the fumigation of the collections spaces, cleaning, topping up of ethanol, replacement of insect sticky traps, identification of pests, educational programmes, processing of loans and donations. I often assist visitors to the collection.
Q: How does it contribute to Collections Management?
A: The Entomology Collection is the largest Iziko natural history collection’s depository, in terms of specimen numbers. My position as a Collections Assistant plays a vital role as I actively contribute towards the curation of these specimens.
Q: What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
A: It would definitely be working with insect specimens. However, I must admit; I do enjoy engaging with different audiences during public programmes. I also enjoy digitizing specimens as it provides an opportunity for me to learn more about these interesting creatures. I always get excited when I have to verify a locality name of a specimen by means of the internet. It is fun to get to learn about places, especially the places that I have not yet visited. I often dream of travelling there.
Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career within Scientific Collections Management?
A: I would start off by saying that a career in this field is a very rewarding one. We are making a difference by preserving our natural heritage for the use of current and future generations long after we are gone. It is also important to note that there are different careers that museums offer. Do your research. Work hard. Motivate yourself. Keep learning. These are my keys to success.
Q: What does Leadership mean to you?
A: A leader must be consistent in his/her actions and words. They must lead by example and must have a positive attitude towards developing others. It is also important to put in the time and energy to achieve institutional goals.
