Q: What inspired you to make this career choice?
A: I have always been fascinated by Micro and Molecular biology. It was through fate that I found myself working in collection management. I was first introduced to the fungi collection when I did my in-service training for my undergrad and I fell in love with it. Then upon completion, I got an opportunity to work in the arachnida collection and I became fonder of the collections. Luckily, my molecular skills did not go to waste and I pursued Molecular studies on collections, which has been by far the highlight of my career.

Q: Give a brief description of what your job entails.
A: I manage the mite collection, assist with the management of the spider collection and research within the Arachnida unit. My roles include accessioning, cataloguing and data-basing of new acquisitions into the collections. I ensure that specimens in vial do not dry up by filling them with alcohol frequently, ensure that labels do not fall off slides, prepare and dispatch loans and assist with curation of the collections.

Q: How does it contribute to Collections Management?
A: It ensures that the collections are well documented, safe, curated accurately and easily accessible.

Q: What is the most exciting aspect of your job?
A: I learn something new every day, which is priceless.

Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career within Scientific Collections Management?
A: Visit the collections, volunteer if possible, talk to the collection staff about their experiences and decide from there.

Q: What does Leadership mean to you?
A: Being assertive, respectful and responsible. Having good guidance and communication skills.
