This training session for NSCF scientists will focus on using OpenRefine for cleaning data. Scientists work with data routinely during their research, whether data they’ve collected themselves or data from other sources. That includes specimen data too. And before analysing data or importing them into a collection database, one should always clean the data first.

OpenRefine is a tool originally built by Google, specifically designed for data cleaning. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you know the basics it is way better than Excel!

Clean up taxon names, split a column into multiple columns, standardise values, change date formats, filter records, and much more.

This training session will be a basic introduction and demonstration of what OpenRefine can do with pointers to how skills can be developed further.
