“The future is dark, with a darkness as much of the womb as of the grave.”
This profound quote, often shared by Sinoxolo Fiki, reflects her belief that growth, innovation, and meaningful change are born from uncertainty and that the unknown is not only something to fear but something to embrace with hope.
A recent addition to the collections team at SAIAB, Sinoxolo brings both a Master of Science degree in Zoology and a fresh, purpose-driven approach to her role. As a 2025 HSRC intern, she supports digitisation, specimen curation, public science engagement, and research, all while keeping a long-term vision in mind: to contribute to a natural science collections field that is more inclusive, community-connected, and future-focused.
Fuelled by Purpose and Passion
Sinoxolo’s journey into collections is rooted in a deep love for biodiversity and a strong appreciation for the foundational role natural science collections play in research and conservation. “Collections support taxonomy, systematics, climate science, and conservation biology,” she says. “They’re central to understanding our world and shaping its future.”
Though she only joined SAIAB in May 2025, she already feels deeply connected to her work. “What I enjoy most is the sense of connection, both with the past and the future. Every specimen tells a story. Preserving those stories for generations of scientists and communities is deeply meaningful.”
Motivation Through Curiosity and Contribution
Fresh from academia, Sinoxolo says she hasn’t yet faced major challenges in her professional journey, but she’s actively preparing for them by grounding herself in a sense of purpose. “When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that my work helps preserve biodiversity and supports scientific knowledge. Even just examining unfamiliar specimens reignites my curiosity and keeps me going.”
That sense of curiosity is matched by a desire to be useful, to contribute to her team and to a wider vision for natural science collections in South Africa.
Leading from Where You Are
Though she’s early in her career, Sinoxolo embraces a proactive, team-orientated leadership style. “Leadership is about supporting others and helping projects move forward, whether or not you have a formal title.” She focuses on dependability, organisation, and openness to feedback, with an eye toward growing into a leader who can coordinate teams, manage collections, and mentor others.
“I admire leaders who are approachable, supportive, and calm under pressure. Those who lead with integrity and are willing to roll up their sleeves alongside everyone else.”
Why the Emerging Leaders Workshop Matters
The NSCF Emerging Leaders Workshop is arriving at the perfect time for Sinoxolo. “This opportunity will help me gain practical skills and fresh perspectives and give me a stronger sense of belonging in the collections community.” She’s especially looking forward to learning from more experienced colleagues and hearing how different institutions approach challenges.
But beyond professional development, she sees the workshop as a springboard for long-term transformation. “I want to walk away with tools and confidence to bring back to my team and use to contribute more meaningfully. I also hope to continue building relationships and networks that will support me long after the workshop ends.”
A Vision for the Future of Collections
For Sinoxolo, the future of natural science collections is about more than research and preservation, it’s about representation, inclusion, and access. She’s passionate about digital equity, community-centred practice, and decentering colonial narratives in how collections are managed and presented.
“I want to be a bridge between information, institutions, and the diverse communities we aim to serve. Young people have the creativity, technological fluency, and social awareness to push this field forward, and I hope to be part of that shift.”
Beyond the Microscope
Off-duty, Sinoxolo describes herself as shy but thoughtful. She enjoys reading, playing games, and immersing herself in ideas. And while she hasn’t yet explored a favourite genus or quirky hobby, she carries with her a powerful sense of purpose, vision, and readiness for what’s ahead.
